Ellen’s sideboard — Held tight by deep time — Wright Studios

Ellen’s sideboard

Held tight by deep time

This walnut is from Bruthen in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains in East Gippsland. Fruit nut trees that once lined the driveway of a farming property.

I have become more and more interested in exotic trees grown here. They change, the land changes them. What is foreign? What is exotic? What version or vision of Australia is imposed, a construction of colonial myopia? The walnut is bound in ancient Red Gum. Wrapped. Held tight by deep time.
